1. I buy a new copy of Scott's Specialized Catalogue of U.S. Stamps and Covers every 2 or 3 years.
2. I subscribe to Linn's Weekly Stamp Newsletter.

For purposes of analyzing the Scott catalog numbers that are included or omitted from this collection, the catalog numbers are broken into managable groups. For most of the 20th century, the grouping is based on the then current regular issue series since that is where the bulk of the subtle differentiation occurs.
